Rig on Fire
SkyTruth and the 2010 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill: Using Science to hold BP and federal regulators accountable.
On April 20, 2010, an explosion on a deepwater rig in the Gulf of Mexico operated by the British oil giant BP left 11 workers dead and opened up a hole in the ocean floor, nearly 5,000 feet below sea level. Before the company succeeded in staunching the flow, the disabled well gushed an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil into the water, far surpassing the Exxon Valdez spill as the worst offshore accident in the industry’s history. Mountaintop Removal

SkyTruth’s Mapping of Mountaintop Removal Mining Helps Shift  the Debate.

SkyTruth analyzed satellite images to map the spread of mountaintop removal coal mining (MTR) over a 30-year period across parts of Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Virginia. The analysis reveals a threefold increase in the area being mined in this way between 1985 and 2005.  The size of individual mines also grew, some to more than 15 square miles – nearly 10,000 acres.  In all, the satellites show more than 2,700 mountain ridge tops were impacted.
